Texas Identity Theft Network
Coordinated by Texas Legal Services Center
Texas Legal Services Center’s mission is to improve the quality of advocacy and expand the availability of legal assistance for low income individuals and organizations in Texas. TLSC is a leading provider of legal services and support to low income Texans and those who serve them. Since 2007, Texas’ identity theft victims have counted on TLSC for advice and assistance.
Texas Legal Services Center (TLSC) has formed an identity theft coalition comprised of a variety of organizations that serve identity theft victims including nonprofits, state and federal agencies, and law enforcement representatives.
“Texans are becoming victims of identity theft at an alarming rate,”notes TLSC’s Executive Director, Randall Chapman. “Texas consistently ranks fourth in the U.S. in the number of identity crimes reported to the Federal Trade Commission.”
The identity theft coalition provides a forum for those who assist identity theft victims in Texas. The coalition is endeavoring to improve the services available to victims. “Identity theft is emotionally traumatizing to victims, yet few services are available tohelp victims overcome the emotional trauma of the crime,” says Paula Pierce, Manager of Hotline Programs at TLSC.
The coalition is also studying the emotional impact of the crime on victims and developing training materials focused on the emotional impact of identity theft to be shared with those who serve identity theft victims.
