Identity Theft Advocacy Network (ITAN) of Colorado
Coordinated by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
Colorado consistently ranks in the top 15 states for identity theft and fraud, with several Colorado cities ranking in the top 10 cities in the nation (according to the Sentinel Report). In 2010, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation’s Identity Theft/Fraud Unit saw an increase in the number of victims seeking support in cases of identity theft and fraud. Most reported cases cross multiple jurisdictions and require cooperation from a number of agencies to resolve. Many victims tell of difficulties in reporting to law enforcement and a lack of assistance offered by supporting agencies.
The Colorado Bureau of Identification is responding to this need by creating the Identity Theft Advocacy Network (ITAN). The Identity Theft Advocacy Network Project will coordinate a statewide coalition of agencies engaged in supporting victims of all types of identity theft. The network includes law enforcement and criminal justice agencies, victim assistance, financial institutions, government agencies, community based agencies and more.
The Network is offering training opportunities and networking for coalition members and their communities. CBI is providing training and networking in person as well as virtually through web based programming to accommodate more rural Colorado communities. CBI is publishing trainings and victim support materials that are available online for communities across Colorado and the nation. Colorado boasts many dedicated professionals and innovative programs committed to providing crime victims with a full range of services and support. ITAN has joined the ranks of programs determined to ensure that all Colorado crime victims are provided with quality services and treated with dignity, fairness and respect.
